Whether you just started to get into some form of the paint & sip business or have been doing this for a long time now, one thing is for sure that keeping up with the technology is tough.

So if you’ve think you finally created the ultimate ‘patchwork’ of systems to service your online orders and fill your studio seats, let’s see if you’ve got some of the basics covered along the way that will keep you from being punished by Google.

Have you noticed a drop off in sign-ups lately? Well In the last few year’s Google has been quietly moving the Internet into a direction that truly is good for all of us. Google is, of course, one of the biggest providers of information. They can also easily become your biggest censor if you don’t keep up-to-date with your website technology. Google has made 3 major moves which will cause your website to show up less and less in their search if you don’t conform.

Are you ready to be shamed?

Coming this October Google will begin to call out websites that aren’t secure and I’m not just talking about your checkout process.

If your website is not running HTTPS (SSL) on every page Google will begin to show a “not secure” message through the Chrome browser to your customers. That means 75% of visitors could be getting warning screens when they visit your site for the first time.

Already the Chrome browser is showing small security notices now, but Google is about to take it up a notch on something so innocent — your “contact us” page!

Yes, even your most basic “contact us” page will become a security embarrassment for you soon. This is all a part of the plan to start labeling sites as insecure. It rolls out in future Chrome updates and where you are going to see it the most is on the mobile phone. If your customers have to enter in any data on a standard HTTP page, Google will alert them with security warnings.

Is Your Site Affected?

Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Does your site have any contact forms? This includes things like your contact us page, party request forms, fundraiser applications, etc.
  • Is your website using HTTP:// in the address bar?

If you answered “yes” to both of those questions you need to implement HTTPS to avoid showing a “Not Secure” warning in your customer’s browsers.

What?! You’re website is still not mobile friendly?

You use your mobile phone for just about everything. So why do you deny that your customers don’t do the same with your studio?

Let’s ignore your website’s overall usability just for a moment and let’s roll back the clocks to 2016!  If you’ve missed it, back in 2016 Google now favors mobile-friendly websites in all searches. Period. Is your competition running a mobile friendly site? Then there is a good chance they will show up before you in a comparable search.

By not running a mobile friendly site today you are also sending a message to your customers — you don’t care.   If you can’t keep up with your website’s basic appearance why would they think spending a night at your studio would be something new and exciting?

 Stop with the pop-ups already.

Yes, those annoying pop-ups that offer you “35% off your first paint class” are hurting your rank. Not only do most people just despise the use of pop-ups, so does Google.

Google is currently penalizing — i.e., lowering the rankings — of these web pages that use pop-ups. If your popups are not carefully crafted to conform to a select few design techniques or methods, then they are taking down your rank in the search engine.

If you’re still trying to DIY your website the best advice we can give is to just stop using pop-ups altogether.

It’s not all doom and gloom.  There is still hope.

If you’re still looking to keep your site going as-is, then we would suggest a call into your support centers are in order.  In most cases applying for an SSL certificate is an annual cost and also a bit more work to redo links, resubmit your site for Google to re-index to HTTPS, and ferret out any buried, hard links to HTTP addresses.   Definitely, coordinate this change with your webmaster.  If your webmaster is you then just be prepared to dive in.
